Lonesome Spur Ranch
"Stetson", a fifth generation Montana Schwend, invites you to visit him, "Grandpa Lonnie" and "Grandma Darlene" at the Lonesome Spur Guest Ranch. Come out for a horseback ride, a night's stay at the "Bunk 'n Board" or plan an extended visit. Whichever you choose, it will be fun!

Sometime around the turn of the century, Claude Schwend and his family endured the perils and hardships of overland travel and staked their claim to 160 acres of fertile land along the Clark's Fork River in South Central Montana. They worked hard, persevered and prospered. From a few cows sprang a sizeable herd.


The homesteader's shanty gave way to a real ranch house and nearby, a sizeable barn sheltered horses, tack and a winter's supply of hay. The same barn is still in use today. The Schwends still live here, raising cattle and harvesting native hay and shoeing horses in the old barn.

The Lonesome Spur has been featured on Jungle Jack Hanna's show. It is also the inspiration for "The Horse Whisperer" by English author Nicholas Evans. Nicholas stayed on the ranch during his research.

You are invited to join us at the Lonesome Spur Ranch where you can ride tall in the saddle, rope a steer, wear "corral dust" on your boots with pride, and earn the right to be called a cowboy. If your Stetson still looks new when you leave, you probably didn't have all the fun you could handle.
